How the Vaporetto Works

Buy Online
Choose your duration, from a 75-minute single ticket to a 7-day pass, and book online in advance. The voucher arrives by email; the PNR code beneath its QR is what you need in Venice. - 2
Exchange Your Voucher
At any ACTV ticket machine, enter the PNR code printed beneath the QR on your voucher; the QR itself is not scanned. Staffed Venezia Unica counters, for example at Piazzale Roma or Santa Lucia station, can assist. - 3
Validate Your Ticket
Validity starts at your first validation, not at purchase. Hold the ticket to the white-and-yellow reader at the landing before boarding. A 24-hour ticket validated at 14:00 runs until 14:00 the next day. - 4

When is the Vaporetto ticket activated?+
The ticket is activated on first validation, not at the time of purchase. As soon as you hold it against the card reader at the dock when boarding, the validity begins and your chosen period (75 minutes, 1, 2, 3 or 7 days) starts counting down. Remember to validate again every time you change boats or board a new service; an unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket.
Where can I buy Vaporetto tickets?+
You can buy Vaporetto tickets at the machines at every major stop, at ACTV and Venezia Unica counters (e.g. at Santa Lucia main station, Piazzale Roma and St. Mark's Square), or online in advance. When buying online you receive a voucher by email; at an ACTV machine in Venice you enter the PNR code printed beneath the voucher's QR code and the machine prints your ticket.
Is the day ticket worth it?+
If you take the Vaporetto more than twice a day, a day ticket usually pays off from the third journey onwards. It is particularly worthwhile if you want to travel along the Canal Grande and also visit the lagoon islands of Murano or Burano in the same day. For longer stays, the 2-day, 3-day or 7-day tickets are almost always cheaper than buying single fares.
Is Line 1 along the Canal Grande included?+
Yes! The famous Line 1, which slowly travels the entire Canal Grande and stops at every station, is included with every Vaporetto ticket. You can also use the express Line 2 with the same ticket. A ride on Line 1 from the main station to St. Mark's Square takes about 45 minutes and is quite possibly the most beautiful "bus tour" in Europe.
Are there discounts for children?+
Children up to and including 6 years of age travel free on ACTV services in the Venice city area. From age 7, the full adult fare applies; there is no standard child discount in the Vaporetto system. Wheelchair users pay a reduced fare, and their accompanying person travels free of charge.
Can I use the ticket to travel to the islands too?+
Yes, the Vaporetto ticket covers Murano, Burano, Torcello and Lido; all four islands are part of the city fare area. Please note: Marco Polo Airport is not included. The airport boats are run by Alilaguna, a different company, and need a separate ticket. ACTV waterbus lines 16, 19 and 21 and the Casinò line are also outside the ticket's scope.
Can I cancel or change my ticket?+
No. Tickets booked through our partner Tiqets are nonrefundable and rescheduling is not possible. Check the travel date, duration and number of travellers before you pay. If your plans are still open, remember that the validity period only starts once you validate the ticket for the first time in Venice.
Can I take luggage on the Vaporetto?+
Yes. Up to three pieces of luggage travel free of charge within ACTV's size rules, and only one of them may measure 120 to 150 cm in combined dimensions. For additional or larger items you need a luggage ticket. In practice, a suitcase and a piece of hand luggage per person are not a problem on the trip from the station to your hotel.
